Week 11: The Battle Within — What Is Spiritual Warfare?

Admin User · 22 March 2026

The Christian life has an enemy — but the battle has already been won. This week we explore what spiritual warfare looks like and how God equips us to stand firm.

1 Opening

This Week's Question

Is there really a spiritual battle going on — and how do I fight it?

This might be the week that feels strangest to modern ears. Spiritual warfare? Armour of God? It can sound like something from a fantasy novel.

But Scripture is blunt about it. There is a real enemy. He has real strategies. And the battle isn't against people — it's against "the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12). The good news? You don't fight alone, and the outcome has already been decided.

2 Scripture

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 19And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 10But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. 11To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

1From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

3 Explanation

Know Your Enemy

The Bible doesn't give Satan more attention than he deserves, but it doesn't ignore him either. Peter warns: "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

But notice what comes next: "Resist him, standing firm in the faith" (1 Peter 5:9). The instruction isn't to be afraid. It's to stand.

Key Verses to Sit With
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
— Ephesians 6:12
"Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."
— Ephesians 6:13
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you."
— James 4:7–8
"The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."
— 1 John 4:4
The Armour of God

Paul describes the equipment God gives us for the battle (Ephesians 6:14–18). It's not a list of things to acquire — it's a description of what you already have in Christ:

  • Belt of truth — You fight with reality, not lies. Know what God says is true about you, about Himself, about the world.
  • Breastplate of righteousness — Your standing before God is secure. The enemy can't condemn you because Christ has already justified you.
  • Shoes of the gospel of peace — You stand on the firm ground of the good news. You are at peace with God.
  • Shield of faith — When doubts and accusations come (and they will), faith deflects them.
  • Helmet of salvation — Your mind is protected by the assurance that you are saved and secure in Christ.
  • Sword of the Spirit — The Word of God. The only offensive weapon listed. Jesus used Scripture to defeat temptation (Matthew 4:1–11) — so can you.

And notice how Paul finishes the list: "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions" (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer isn't separate from the armour — it's the atmosphere in which you wear it.

A word from Pastor Claudette: The enemy's primary weapon is the lie. He lied in the Garden: "Did God really say…?" He lies to you today: "You're not really saved. God doesn't really love you. You'll never change." The way you fight a lie is with the truth. Know your Bible. Know what God says about you. When the lie comes — and it will — speak the truth back. Out loud if you have to. That's what Jesus did in the wilderness, and it's what you can do too.

4 Application

Making It Personal
  • What lies have you been believing about yourself, about God, or about your situation?
  • Which piece of the armour of God do you most need to "put on" right now? Why?
  • How does knowing the battle is already won change the way you face daily struggles?
  • What specific truth from Scripture could you hold onto this week when the enemy attacks?

5a Prayer

Lord God, I confess that sometimes I forget there's a battle going on. I mistake the enemy's lies for my own thoughts. I mistake his accusations for truth. Open my eyes to see the real fight — and equip me to stand. I put on Your armour today: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and Your Word. I resist the enemy in Your name, and I trust that the One in me is greater than the one in the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.
